SEO Lessons From My Time at the Theater

My First Lesson In SEO

The year was 1977. It was my first job working at a movie theater named “Astor Cinema”. My boss, Mr. Hernandez, had just secured the rights to Saturday Night Fever. It was like winning the Lotto! The theater, located in a Hispanic neighborhood in Miami, sold-out for over 6 months. With the profits, Mr. Hernandez opened a new theater and named it “Ambassador 4”.  Little did I know it then, but I was about to receive my first lesson on search engine optimization (SEO).

One day, I asked Mr. Hernandez about his choice for theater names. I wasn’t sure how the names “Astor” and “Ambassador” resonated with our Hispanic market? Mr. Hernandez pulled me aside and said, “Fernando, when people look for theaters in the yellow pages, they start with the A’s. I want my theaters to be seen at the top of the page.”

Why Is Page One Placement Important Today?

Fast forward to 2016. The internet is huge and growing every day. People need search engines to find anything. The yellow pages have been replaced by Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. Industry data tells us that over 80% of purchases begin with an online search. While searching, nearly 90% of online users do not scroll past the 1st page. That’s why, if you’re not in the top positions, it’s hard for your customers to find you. This hurts your business. What’s worse, if they’re not finding you, they’re finding your competition.

Organic SEO is the best way for your business to be found online. Here’s how it works: Every 3 to 6 weeks, search engines crawl the internet. They use software called “robots” or “spiders”, to find websites. Then, they rank the sites according to how relevant they are to specific search terms. Those sites deemed most relevant, move to the top. Your site needs to be better than your competition, to gain top placement.

How Do I Get Placement?

Placement depends on what the search engines “see”. So your website needs to give the robots the correct information to make you visible. Top SEO firms make sure that your site has the correct content and the correct code, to succeed in search. At Page One Guru, we call that “fixing your website to tell your story.” This drives more qualified leads to your site. Now, you are found online by people actively looking for your product/services. This is good for business.

Once you get to the top, you have to stay there. The internet is always evolving. Without the proper monitoring and focus, it is easy to get left behind. But, with proper SEO, your site’s position will strengthen over time.

In Conclusion

SEO, when done well, is worth it. Once placed, your company will enjoy the benefits of dominating online. Because through organic SEO, the search engines are now working for you.

I worked for Mr. Hernandez for over four years. By the time I left, I was the assistant manager at his newest theater … “Americas 4”. Being at the top, helped Mr. Hernandez grow his business. Your business will also benefit from being found at the top of page one.

  1. Very informative blog.Really thank you! Really Cool.

  2. One of the main differences between a typical PR department and an SEO firm is that SEO professionals focus on attaining backlinks to their main landing page. This is another area where traditional PR and SEO are coming together. PR could have a much more digital focus if they took lessons from SEO professionals. I m fascinated to watch how these two industries continue to converge.
